FAQ
Why should an orthodontic specialist complete my treatment?
Orthodontic treatment permanently changes teeth and, in some cases, facial structures. It's essential that treatment is done correctly. Orthodontic specialists undergo extensive training to ensure they provide precise, professional, and personalized care.
At what age should I schedule an orthodontic screening?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a screening at age 7. By this age, several permanent teeth have typically erupted, allowing for an accurate evaluation of the child's orthodontic condition.
Will my teeth straighten as I grow older?
No, they won't. The space available for front teeth does not increase with age. In fact, after the permanent molars erupt, the space often decreases.
Is it too late to get braces as an adult?
Not at all! One in four orthodontic patients is an adult. There is no age limit for achieving a healthy, confident smile. Orthodontic treatment can improve both self-esteem and oral health at any stage of life.
Do you offer Clear Aligner treatment?
Yes! We specialize in Clear Aligner treatment, including SPARK® and Invisalign®, as an alternative to traditional braces. Clear Aligners are nearly invisible, removable, and comfortable, making them a great option for teens and adults who want a discreet way to straighten their teeth.
How do Clear Aligners work?
Clear Aligners use a series of custom-made, removable trays that gradually shift your teeth into place. Each set of aligners is worn for about 4 weeks before moving to the next set in the series.
Am I a good candidate for Clear Aligners?
Clear Aligners are ideal for many patients with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns, such as crowding, spacing, and minor bite issues. A consultation with our orthodontist will determine if Clear Aligners are the best option for you.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment time varies based on individual needs, typically ranging from 12 to 30 months, with the average case taking about 22 months.
How often will I need an appointment?
Most patients with braces have appointments every 5 to 10 weeks, though some may require more frequent visits based on their specific treatment plan.
Can I drop my child off for an appointment?
Yes! We understand busy schedules and are happy to accommodate. However, we may occasionally need to speak with a parent, so we ask that you check in with your child's patient manager before leaving.
Do braces hurt?
Braces generally do not hurt. Some discomfort may occur after adjustments, but it usually subsides within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers like Advil or Tylenol can help. Most of the time, patients feel little to no soreness!
Can I play sports or musical instruments with braces?
Yes! We recommend wearing a mouthguard for sports. Musicians may experience a short adjustment period but will quickly adapt to playing with braces.
Do I need to see my general dentist while wearing braces?
Yes! Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are crucial during orthodontic treatment to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
How often should I brush my teeth with braces?
Brushing at least our times daily (after meals and before bed) is essential. We will also teach you how to floss with braces and may recommend a special fluoride treatment if needed.
Are there any foods I should avoid with braces?
Yes. To prevent damage to your braces, avoid:
❌ Sticky foods (caramel, taffy)
❌ Hard foods (ice, hard candy, raw vegetables)
❌ Chewy foods (gum, tough bread)
Following these guidelines will help prevent unnecessary repairs and keep your treatment on track!
