WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR GUM CONTOURING APPOINTMENT:
Gum contouring is done with a laser to help reduce overgrown gums and even out the gum line to achieve an ideal cosmetic and biologic result.
The gum tissue is numbed with a topical numbing agent. It is normal to feel heat or pressure during the procedure, but the patient will not feel pain.
During this appointment the gums are shaped to achieve an aesthetic look that will enhance the smile by the orthodontist.
At the doctor's discretion, a frenectomy may also be recommended and done at the time of treatment.
This appointment takes approximately 45 minutes.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER:
The gum tissue around the collar of the tooth may have a darkened appearance which is normal.
It will take approximately 3-7 days for the tissue to heal and return to its normal appearance.
The gums will be tender and sore during that time.
You will use the provided mouth rinse to help the gums heal. After brushing, rinse 1-2 times daily for the next three days.
When brushing your teeth please take your toothbrush to where the gum meets the tooth and brush downwards, away from the gums. This will prevent the tissue from trying to grow back.
Avoid acidic and spicy foods to prevent irritation.
